Volkswagen chose the thong-y stage of the São Paulo Motor Show to unveil a concept vehicle that turned heads and puzzled brows. Named after a nomadic tribe of Northern Africa that had once assisted VW’s chairman on a safari, the Taigun (not to be confused with the Tiguan) is a crossover SUV concept. Whether it has a strange penchant for digging up root grubs from the soil to roast over open flames for a quick snack is yet to be determined.
If it ever makes it to market, the Taigun will be fitted with a turbocharged three-cylinder motor that is able to churn out 108 horsepower and achieve 50 miles to the gallon. Motor show gawkers are describing its interior as being “space age” and “spacious.” Industry observers believe that if it becomes a production vehicle, the VW Taigun will battle other small-crossovers, such as Nissan’s Juke, in both South and North America.
