The muscle car wars may heat up. The Dodge Challenger’s makeover for the 2015 model year may include a supercharged 550-horsepower Hemi V8 –internally dubbed “Hellcat”– according to industry experts.
The carmaker is seen as keen to compete with the Cadillac CTS-V, Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, muscle cars of the 550-plus HP variety.
The new engine would be optional in the Challenger, and is expected to be offered as well in the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, and less likely in the SRT Barracuda, according to Michael Omotoso of LMC Automotive.
If these are in fact its plans, Chrysler is not telling, for now. Company spokesman Eric Mayne called reports about the new engine “speculation”, and refused to comment on them.
