Auto industry observers eyes focused on the tea leaves are starting to say that General Motors is not satisfied with the happy thoughts and warm reviews its Silverado pickup has rightfully garnered. No, these soothsayers are saying that the thinking heads at GM also want to go head-to-head against Ford’s sporty pickup, the F-150-based SVT Raptor.
Talking about this desire, Chris Hilts, GM’s manager of creative design for its full-size truck interiors, said, “Our leadership is very aware of not only the Harley-Davidson pickup, but also the Raptor. There are a lot of halo vehicles at Ford. They do sell well and they do set a tone for the vehicle. We definitely are looking into that.”
Other industry observers are also saying that GM does not dream the sporty pickup dream alone. They say that odds are that Chrysler will also, at some point, enter the battle with a stock, performance pickup that buyers can upgrade to their beating hearts’ desires.
