In its ongoing quest to produce America’s most-fuel-efficient, full-sized pickup, Chrysler has announced that its light-duty Ram pickup truck will soon be available with a diesel engine.

The current six-cylinder is already a modest drinker of gas getting 25 miles to the gallon on the highway, best in its field. However, according to Bob Hegbloom, director of the Ram brand, the 3-lier, six-cylinder diesel Ram 1500 will outdo even that, although its actual fuel efficiency ratings have yet to be released.

Talking about the 2014 Ram 1500 diesel, Hegbloom said, “Now that we’re the only ones with a light duty diesel application… people will come in and consider us.”

The soon-to-be-released Ram diesel will have a starting price of $24,200, around $250 more than the Rams currently available.
