Can Psychedelic Colors Camouflage the Greatness Out of a McLaren MP4-12C?
German tuner Hamann Motorsports has given a $259,000 McLaren MP4-12C supercar a $122,000 paint job that is truly psychedelic. Reminding this writer of the eggs he produced with a special Easter Egg coloring kit he had as a boy one year that colored eggs with a swirling rainbow of brightness in much the same way hippies tie-die their shirts, the colors of this “upgraded” 616 horsepower look as if they came from the cool, top row of the Crayola 64 pack.
However, the question is, does this crazy paint job help the car stand out as only a supercar should? No, says this writer. Though the colors do indeed draw attention, the way that the colors stripe across the car’s exterior breaks up the car’s outline making it more indistinguishable from its surroundings in the exact same way that a giraffe’s spots hide it from a predator’s eyes. A supercar needs a distinguishing outline, not muddled lines.
