Volkswagen Golf owners will likely be impressed with–and jealous of–this extreme version called the VW Golf R 400. It was revealed at the Beijing Motor Show last month. The GTI W12-650 concept was intended to be the new version but The Golf R 400 has emerged as a better option. The GTI W12-650 with 641 horsepower was never destined for production but the Golf R 400 was.
It has been indicated by the Volkswagen Research and Development Chief, Heinz-Jakob Neusser, that the Golf R 400 can produce more than 395 horsepower in the production model which could end up running 0-60 in 3.5 seconds with DSG and all-wheel drive. It will beat the current Golf R which runs 0-60 in 5 seconds and the 0-62 at 3.7 seconds of the GTI W12. This new Golf R 400 could be considered the new “super hatchback.” To be available to the VW fan base in the United States, the Golf R 400 would be required to meet our industry safety standards–modifications which, unfortunately, could prove to lower the car’s performance and increase sales prices.
