Home / History / First Auto Time Trials Hosted in Ormond Beach, FL March 26, 1903

It was 110 years ago this March 26 that the first ever official speed time trials ever took place at Ormond Beach, Florida. Selected for its stretch of hard-packed sand, remember asphalt roads were basically non-existent back then, Ormond Beach has forever since worn the moniker of the “Birthplace of Speed.”

Although there is no mistaking that Daytona Beach gets all of the acclaim nowadays, there should be no forgetting of those three Spring days from March 26 to 28, 1903 when Oscar Hedstrom on his Indian motorcycle, Alexander Winton in his Bullet, Ransom E. Olds in his Pirate, and a collection of other early speed-freaks raced up and down Ormond Beach breaking a number of U.S. and world speed records.
