There was a time when all-wheel drive (AWD) was reserved for a few expensive cars. Not any more. Nearly every manufacturer makes an AWD car. That is not to say that each is created equally. We waded through a few dozen entries in order to provide you with a list of the best AWD cars under $30,000 built through researching Consumer Reports articles, IIHS and NHTSA records, and finally checking our prices on kbb.com and nadaguides.com.

Subaru Impreza

Subaru WRX undre $30KSince AWD cars are not known for stellar gas mileage, we wanted to begin with an AWD car with solid fuel economy. A new 2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Limited with a CVT transmission offers 25 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway. The fuel economy numbers are very similar if you opt for a lower trim level with a 5-speed manual. You can buy an Impreza equipped as mentioned for less than $22,000. If you opt for the 2.0i Premium trim with a 5-speed, the price drops to $19,500.

MINI Cooper Countryman ALL4

Every MINI on the road is fun to drive. The stiff handling and sports car feel appeal to many enthusiast. The 1.6L turbo engine is fun to drive and the unique styling makes a statement wherever you may go. At 25 mpg city and 31 highway, the fuel economy isn’t too bad either. You should be able to find a 2012 MINI Cooper Countryman ALL4 for $23,000 in most areas.

BMW 5-series

BMW 5-Series AWD under $30KFor all of the German engineering enthusiasts out there, we have the BMW 5-series. In order to meet our price point of 30K, you will need to look for a little bit older model. You should be able to find a 2010 BMW 528i xDrive for around $25,500, while the 535i is a few thousand more, given the two extra cylinders. Either way, this is a good all-weather sedan that looks significantly more expensive than it is.

Cadillac CTS

Cadillac CTS AWD under $30KWe could not offer you a German luxury car without counter-balancing it with an American luxury car. The Cadillac CTS offers a great number of luxury amenities in a sporty sedan. We do need to point out that AWD is only available as an option, so you will need to double check before buying. You should be able to find a 2010 Cadillac CTS 3.6 sedan for $24,500 in your area.

Audi TT Quattro

Audi TT AWD under $30KWe could not feel as if the list was complete without one true sports car. With several to choose from, we kept coming back to the TT Quattro. Was it the responsive 2.0L turbo begging to be driven or the intense handling that tipped the scales? We may never know. You should be able to find a 2011 Audi TT Quattro Premium Plus for $28,000 in your area. If you prefer the TTS trim level, you will need to step back to 2008 to find one under $30,000.
