Just knowing that your car has a turbocharger makes you want to hit the gas. The urge to unleash every available pony is nearly irresistible. Unfortunately, turbo-powered cars usually carry a high sticker price. In order to find one priced under $20,000 you will have to look for a used model. To help you narrow your search a little bit, here is a short list of the best used turbo-powered cars under $20,000.

Subaru Impreza WRX Premium

Subaru WRXIf you have been doing any amount of reading about fun to drive turbo powered cars, the Impreza WRX has been mentioned several times. The engine in these cars is very responsive and AWD adds a sense of control that will exhilarate any driver. If you want to buy a new top of the line WRX, you will want the STI and you will need to pay around $34,000. The STI is a fairly new trim level, but you can find a nicely equipped 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX Premium with a 2.5L turbo for around $18,000.

Since the WRX is the most frequently modified car in North America, you will want to take care to buy one that has not been altered in any way.

Mitsubishi Ralliart

Mitsubishi LancerMitsubishi is not your first thought when you think of a fun car. Neither is the Lancer, but the Ralliart is a different breed. The body styling and the 2.0L turbo under the hood help it stand head and shoulders above lesser trim levels. A 2010 Mitusbishi Lancer Ralliart should set you back $18,500. The Lancer also offers the Evolution GSR trim level, which is a arguably a better performing car, but it misses our price point by a few thousand dollars.

Volkswagen Golf TDI

VW Golf TDIThe Volkswagen Golf TDI is one of the most fun to drive hatchbacks on the market today. The turbo-diesel is so responsive and hard to kill it is almost sick and the handling too tight to describe. One other great feature is the relatively low sticker price. You can find a low mileage 2012 Volkswagen Golf TDI for twenty grand. If that is pushing your budget, you can step back two years and find a 2010 priced around $17,000.

Audi TT Roadster

Audi TTAudi began combining luxury and turbo engines in the TT in 1998. The newest TT that meets our price point is the 2008 Audi TT Roadster Coupe. It features a 2.0L engine that blasts out 200 hp in a hearbeat. A nice low mileage 2008 Audi TT Roadster Coupe will run in the neighborhood of $16,500. If you want to push the 20K boundary a bit, you can upgrade to the 2009 TT Quattro Premium. It has the same engine specs, but adds the fun of AWD for around $22,300.

There have been many other turbocharged cars that would make this list if you want to go back 15 years or more. The Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4, and the Dodge Stealth all come to mind. Hit us up in the comments section if you have a turbo in mind that you think should have made the list.
