Home / The Best Cars for Every Budget / The Best Used Sports Cars Under $20,000

Nothing says good times like a shiny sports car. There is just something about having a few thousand pounds of go fast to propel you any where you want to go. Of course, that speed comes with a handsome price tag. A price tag that can be difficult to afford for many people. Luckily, there are plenty of used sports cars out there. For those of us who want some go fast and have a budget to keep in mind, here are five of the best used sports cars under $20,000. We qualified each car as ”best” by comparing ratings by J.D. Power and Associates, information from Consumer Reports, and consumer reviews. Our prices were garnered from average dealer prices as listed on kbb.com and nadaguides.com.

Ford Mustang under $20K

The Mustang has been both a muscle car and a status symbol for the average American for half a century. While we all dream of having a Shelby GT500 sitting out front, we need to settle for a lower trim level in order to stay under twenty grand. You can buy a nice 2009 GT with the Premium trim level for around $18,000 in most areas. If you are willing to look for a non-GT Mustang, you can buy a 2009 with the entry level trim for around $12,000.

Audi S4 under $20K

Audi offers many vehicles that might be considered sporty, but the S4 is considered by most as the best for comfort, road grip, and driving excitement. A brand new S4 with a middle-of-the-road trim package easily hits $60,000, so it doesn’t fit into many budgets. On the used sports car market, though, an S4 is a viable option for just about everyone. You can find a 2007 Audi S4 with less than 90K miles for around $16,000. Not bad for a car that is equipped with a 4.2L V8 that offers 340 hp and the all-wheel drive to keep it on the road.

Chevrolet Corvette under $20K

Have you ever known anyone who owned a Corvette to complain about the car in any way? Neither have I. Corvettes have power to spare, handle amazingly in turns, and…well, its a Corvette! Finding one under $20,000 is fairly easy. Most models from the mid-80s through 2005 will meet our price point. A 2005 Corvette convertible stretches our target price tag by coming in right at 20K. That is still very affordable given that you will be buying a drop top that is begging you to unleash all 400 hp.

Infiniti G37 under $20K

Infiniti is best known for its sleek luxury sedans. The G37 is a driving enthusiasts dream. The base model 2008 G37 is powered by a 3.7L V6 that offers up 307 hp. If you shop for the upgraded Sport package, the 3.7L is boosted to offer 328 hp and is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission to add to the fun. The 2008 Infiniti G37 Sport should be listed for around $19,000. If you opt for a 2006 G35, the price tag will drop down to around $12,000.

Subaru Impreza WRX under $20K

It is nearly impossible to create a list of used sports cars without mentioning the WRX. If you did, you would probably be stoned by some rogue enthusiast. The WRX is by far the most frequently tuned 4-cylinder in the world. The aftermarket is huge as is the forum following. A 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX with the Premium trim package is powered by a turbo-charged 2.5L engine paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The pairing offers 265 hp and 240 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 rpms and should hit your local dealership for around $18,000. The WRX is a very reliable car, if…you buy one that has not been tuned. You need to be careful to buy one that the previous owner has not tinkered with as the aftermarket additions void all warranties and reduce the reliability of the car.
