Home / The Best Cars for Every Budget / The Best Used SUVs Under $5,000

SUVs tend to hold their value for quite a while, even after their fifth birthday. That makes finding one under $5,000 that doesn’t have more rust than body or a quarter million miles on it a bit difficult. Fortunately, with some careful shopping it can be done. Here are a few SUVs that you may want to look for when you are out shopping. One caveat, all prices are quoted as if you buy from a dealership.

Ford Explorer

You can find many older Explorers still on the road. You can also find many of them for sale under the $5,000 mark. If you are satisfied with 2WD you can find a 2003 four-door Explore for our price point, but if you feel a need for 4WD you will need to look for a 2002 or older.

Chevy Tahoe

There are many people still driving their 1996 Tahoe on a daily basis. When an SUV can be driven for nearly twenty years, you know it is reliable. You will not have to look for one quite that old in order to meet our price point, but you will need to shop for a 2002 or older model.

Nissan Xterra

The Nissan Xterra is a rugged looking SUV that can comfortable ride down the highway or go off road. Nissan is not very well known for its SUVs and trucks, which is a good thing for someone who is looking for one under the $5,000 mark. You can find a well appointed 2004 Xterra with a 3.3L V6 and 4WD for around $4,800. A similarly equipped 2003 falls into the $3,700 range.

Chevrolet Blazer/GMC Jimmy

As with the Chevy/GMC pick-ups these are the same vehicle with different badges. The 2002 Blazer/Jimmy duo offered a standard 4.3 V6 and 4WD that can be found for around $4,500 today. Both combine solid performance with low cost maintenance.

Dodge Durango

It is almost impossible to drive anywhere without seeing a Durango. A base model 2003 Durango with the standard 4.7L V8 and 4WD hits the market around $4,700. If you find one with the optional 5.9L V8, the price tag pushes to the verge of $5,000. It also drops your fuel economy to 11 mpg in the city. That isn’t much of a drop considering the smaller eight is only rated for 13 mpg in the city.
